As this particular part of my tree is so vast due to the fact there are more people, I have found it better to talk about the children and descendants of James and Matilda McGaffin in stages. I will begin with their eldest son George who might have inherited his fathers’ farm had he not immigrated to the United States in 1880. As mentioned in the previous post George married Eliza Ann Copeland and they had 8 children:
• James b. 28th February 1866, m. Ella Nelson 17th June 1897, d. 10th October 1942
• Robert b. 28th January 1868 – suspect he died at a young age
• William Henry b. 24th August 1870, m. Minnie Olive Louise Van-Camp Stryker in 1889
• Joseph b. 9th September 1873 – suspect he died at a young age
• George Wight b. 18 Dec 1875
• Isabella b. 19th August 1878, m. Wiley Leander Hoy 28th December 1896, d. 19th February 1964 in Grand Forks, North Dakota
• Lillie b. 27th July 1882, m. John Emery Coleman , d. 11th October 1963 in Beltrami, Minnesota
• Margery b. September 1885, Peter Marcus Barness 24th January 1906, d. 29th December 1937 in Beadle, South Dakota
The youngest two – Lillie and Margery – were born in South Dakota while the rest were born in Newry.
The family are first seen living in Lincoln, Spink, South Dakota in 1900 before moving to Petersburg in North Datoka and remaining there until at least 1925. It is not known when but the family did move to Beltrami, Minnesota. George spends all of his life as a farmer on his own land with the help of his son George Jnr who doesn’t appear to leave home.
George Snr died on 17th October 1927 aged 85; he is buried in Lake View Cemetery, Minnesota alongside his wife Eliza who died three years later.

• Leda Ethelinda McGaffin b. 19th August 1984 in Frankfort, Spink, South Dakota and d. 15th September 1985 in British Columbia. Married a John Henry Cooper but as of yet a marriage record has yet to materialise.
