The only daughter of James and Matilda McGaffin, born 19th November 1852 and married William McCullough on 15th August 1879. As far as I am aware this is the only part of the family that has moved to New Zealand and Australia. What I noticed on the marriage record was an inscription saying that Isabella was married in her fathers’ house. They had six children:
• Matilda Maud b. 6th Dec 1881 in Belfast, m. John Quin 1st April 1907 – one daughter Isabel b. 19th March 1910
• Abraham b. 11th October 1883 in Belfast, m. Minnie Davidson, d. 18th June 1969 in Adelaide, South Australia
• William b. 8th January 1886 in Belfast, m. Catherine Connoly 30th May 1914, d. 9th February 1972. They had three children – Mary Ellen McCullough b. 11th July 1915 in Sydney and d. 7th August 1998, Joseph Michael McCullough b. 25th December 1918 and d. 18th August 1941 in Libya after being shot down over the sea in an unequal fight with two German aircraft. Joseph had been serving in the Australian RAF and his name is on the Alamein Memorial for the airmen of the Commonwealth who have no known grave. Before joining the RAF Joseph had worked as a bus driver and conductor. There is supposed to be a third son William Jnr according to the newspaper obituary of William Snr.
• James b. 17th February 1887 in Belfast. d. 15th December 1887 from measles
• Isabella b. 6th August 1888 in Belfast, d. 20th December 1976. Married a George Knowles
• Joseph b. 2nd September 1889 in Belfast and d. 2nd May 1915 in Gallipoli. He was serving in the 13th Battalion Australian Infantry, service number 1438A and is commemorated on the Lone Pine Memorial in Turkey.
The family were living at 16 Maryville Park, Antrim in 1901 before immigrating to New Zealand although some of the children did move to Australia. Isabella died on 19th February 1928 at the age of 75.
